·              The global food industry is targeting the GCC market as an opportunity for future growth, as GGC spending on food imports is set to more than double from US$ 24 billion in 2008 to US$ 49 billion by 2020 according to a report by the Economist Intelligence Unit.

·              Saudi Arabia’s estimated annual population growth of 2.5 per cent is expected to push food consumption by 10.9 per cent through 2013. The hike in consumption will be driven mainly by youth less than 30 years old who comprise around 70 per cent of the population and who are particularly fond of fast food. Saudi Arabia imports over SAR18.8 billion worth of food and beverage products a year to supplement local production.

· Due to limited agriculture and industrial sectors, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) imports over 80 per cent of its food products. The rapidly growing population and affluence of the UAE has spiraled the demand for high quality and specialized foods, thus creating opportunities for Australian suppliers in a wide range of food and beverage areas. UAE grocery retailing is growing at 5-10 per cent per annum. Foods sold in retail outlets consist of 75-80 per cent imported consumer-ready products.

· Valued at US$3 billion (2007) the UAE’s food processing industry is growing at 11% a year, according to a report by the Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry, owing its growth to being the world's third largest re-exporter.

· Since the Iranian government has lifted the import restrictions on food products in 2003, imports of foreign food and drink products are increasing year by year. Within 2 years for instance, between 2005/06 and 2007/08, imports increased by 114 %, from US $ 698.7 million to US $ 1,500.1 billion.

· Bahrain’s food consumption likely to increase by 25.5 percent in the next four years with the kingdom's food trade predicted to reach BD175m ($456.5m), according to a new report.
